15 February 2012 Fishing Report

15 February 2012, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Sportfishing report from www.picantesportfishing.com.

What is sport fishing like in February in Cabo San Lucas? Well it’s a mixed bag of fishes. There are a good variety of fishes available. The main attraction, as usual in Cabo San Lucas, is marlin. And this time of year it is Striped Marlin that are available.

With our cool water temperatures the bait are in and so are the Striped Marlin. There have been some good catches of Striped Marlin and an unusual catch of a Blue Marlin in February. You never know for sure what you can catch here in Cabo. There have also been some siting’s of Swordfish.

The Yellowtail bite has been pretty good and should continue for a while. And there are some nice grouper being caught.

There have been some reports of grouper of over 50 pounds just outside of the marina. There are still Sierra Mackerel around and they are keeping the inshore fishermen happy.

And the Yellowfin Tuna are still biting even though not many big ones are coming to the boats.

And there have been some nice Wahoo caught during  the month.

And it was exciting that the Picante 45  and Chaos one day saw a pod of Killer Whales right between the two boats.

There is our mixed bag. And there are more to come.

Picante Sportfishing's December Fishing Report

The Month of December 2011 Equals Big Tuna

If one word is needed to describe the fishing in Cabo San Lucas during the month of December 2011, that word would be Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna to be exact. If we go a step further the two words that described December fishing would be Big Tuna. We could go to Lots of Tuna and then to Lots of Big Tuna and on and on. Well, over 50% of the fish caught in December were Yellowfin Tuna. And you will be able to see in the photos that there were lots of big ones.

The beginning of the month started out with a real fun trip for two of our clients from Georgia. They had a pretty good day with a couple of Striped Marlin being released on the Picante 29. That would be considered a great fishing day by most, but that was not how the 7th of December 2011 would be remembered. It was the end of the day and Captain Alex and Mate Fernando were bringing in the lines when one of the last two lines in the water went tight. Well they hooked up and started a fight that would end up lasting 4 ½ hours. They got in after dark and since the fish had died during the fight, they decided to weigh the Big Blue Marlin that they had brought in.

Well they did and it tipped the scales at 601 pounds. That is one whopper of a marlin. They were the only boat fishing from the Picante Sportfishing Fleet that day and they hit it big-time.

Then it was time for the tuna to step up to the plate, no pun intended.

Some days it was just some nice sized eating fish.

And then there were other days when there were true giants landed.

It seemed like Captain Brincos and Mate Hugo onboard the Salsa were the guys with the hot hands.

They brought in quite a few big Yellowfin Tuna. A lot of them were bigger than the captain.

The other boats did their parts and brought in lots of Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado and more Striped Marlin.

The Picantito II, a 24’ Shamrock had some good days, especially the one where they ran out of room for their flags. They landed 8 Dorado, released a couple more, caught a Wahoo and released 2 Striped Marlin.

All in all December 2011 in Cabo San Lucas has been a great month.

Giant Yellowfin Tuna Wins 2011 Los Cabo Tuna Jackpot, But Is Overshadowed By Big Winnings of Second Place Fish

4 November 2011. Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Fishing report courtesy of picantesportfishing.com

Just as was anticipated, today turned out to be a great day in the 2011 Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot. It was declared as the best fishing day in the history of the Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot. The first day was a parade of medium Yellowfin Tuna from about 40 pounds to almost 119 pounds until the giant 198.1 pound giant tuna that was the top fish of day one.

Hopes were high as the second day started and not only were the hopes high, but the catches were up there, too. Day two was a much more exciting day with fish ranging from about 140 pounds up to the three giant Yellowfin Tuna that tipped the scales at over 200 pounds.

As the day headed to the end of weigh station time the anticipation was high for the Cabo Magic team that had already weighed in a monster Yellowfin Tuna of 213 pounds. That was the fish to beat and it was looking good for the Magic Team.

Then just as the clock was ticking down and the last boats were in the harbor for the weighins the fun started. First, Team True weighed a 164 pound big Yellowfin Tuna that knocked the 149.4 pound Yellowfin Tuna weighed in earlier by the Maybe Manana out of the $10,000 jackpot. That really got the crown excited. Then the team from True really got the excitement up by weighing their second fish. It hit the scales at 206 pounds which topped the second place giant Yellowfin Tuna cow of 205 from team Bottom Line. Then the announcement was made that the Team True was entered in all the jackpots.

What that all means is that the team on Cabo Magic won first place, but since they weren’t in the big jackpots they didn’t hit the big money. They did take home a cool $34,800. They fought the fish for 4.5 hours and deserved the win.

But the big winner was team True, that was entered in all the jackpots. They won $190,200 in the Day Two optional and also won $4,320 for second place. That brought their winnings to $194,520.

Third place was won by team Bottom Line. In all it was a very exciting 2011Tuna Jackpot, one that won’t be forgotten for a long time.

Giant 198.1 Pound Yellowfin Tuna Captures Lead in Day One of the Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot

3 November 2011 Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico.

Day one of the Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot tournament had just come to an end. There were 108 boats entered in the tournament, but only a few hit the scales with qualifying fish. The big fish of the day was a 198.1 pound giant Yellowfin Tuna that got lots of ooo’s and ahhhh’s from the crowd. Eleven tuna were weighed and only 4 were over 100 pounds. There is nothing wrong with tuna under 100 pounds, but in the Tuna Jackpot everyone is looking for the giants. And the 198.1 pound Yellowfin Tuna caught on the Angelina fit the bill to a tee.

And a 55.5 pound Wahoo caught by the Checkmate won the day 1 Wahoo/Dorado Jackpot.

Now the big excitement is coming up. With the showing of fish today the fishermen will be energized to go out and work hard for some winners. And with the winds still down the boats will be ready to run the distance out to the tuna grounds.
