Day Three of the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament Ends in Another Big Yellowfin Tuna Being Brought to the Scales.

14 October 2011 Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Tournament Report from picantesportfishing.com.

Day three of the 2011 Los Cabos Billfish Tournament was another beautiful Cabo fishing day. It was sunny and the temperatures were in the low 90’s Fahrenheit with a slight breeze out of the north west. The humidity was in the high 60’s. The water temperatures were in the mid to high 80’s Fahrenheit and the moon is 92% full.

Day three of the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament was not as exciting as the last couple of days. Only one marlin, a Black Marlin was brought to the scales. It was landed by Bad Company and was hoped to be big enough to win the daily jackpot. When it hit the scales there was disappointment in the air as it only registered 276 pounds. It was short 24 pounds from winning the daily jackpot. Bad luck for the Bad Company team who had hoped to squeak by the minimum.

The daily winner in the Tuna division was a 135 pound Yellowfin Tuna caught by the Zhao. It looks like it will be the third place tuna, pending the announcement at tomorrow’s awards banquet.

The winning fish in the Wahoo division was a 39.3 pound fish caught by the Wild Carter. With all the focus being on the marlin, not many large gamefish were being caught except in the Yellowfin Tuna Division.

Tune in tomorrow for the official announcements of the winner after the 2011 Los Cabos Billfish Tournament Award Dinner. And stay tuned for the results of the Bisbee’s Los Cabos tournament which starts tomorrow. It is tournament time in Cabo and the fun keeps happening.

Monster Yellowfin Tuna Takes the Lead in the Gamefish Division of the 2011 Los Cabos Billfish Tournament

13 October 2011 Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Tournament Report from picantesportfishing.com.

Day two of the 2011 Los Cabos Billfish Tournament was a beautiful day. It was sunny and the temperatures were, again, in the low 90’s Fahrenheit with a slight breeze out of the west. The humidity was in the high 60’s. The water temperatures were in the mid 80’s Fahrenheit and the moon is 96% full.

The first fish of the day was a 25 pound Dorado that just made the 25 pound cut off limit. The Cabolero was the first boat to weigh a Dorado during the tournament.

Just a few minutes later the Red Rum brought a Dorado to the scale and it tipped the scales at 28.5 pounds to beat the Dorado from the Cabolero. It seems like most boats were targeting the billfish, as was expected and only caught Dorado as a bonus. The fish weren’t too big, but a winner is a winner and a daily jackpot can pay out some big money.

The next fish weighed was a Wahoo. It, again, wasn’t a large fish, but it scored big as it was the only Wahoo weighed in the first two days of the tournament. At only 27 pounds it was still a winner. It was brought to the scales by the Karma 3, which scored yesterday’s biggest Yellowfin Tuna at 216 pounds.

Then came the fish of the day. It was not only the biggest fish of the day brought to the scales, but was the largest Yellowfin Tuna of the tournament so far. Yesterday’s giant Yellowfin Tuna of 216 pounds which was expected to win the largest tuna of the tournament, but it was passed by a monster Yellowfin Tuna of 240 pounds brought in by the Fisherman.

Sometimes we find it hard to remember that all fish are good and it doesn’t take a giant fish to win a tournament. As fisherman we have to respect that the fact that we don’t always catch big fish. All fish are a gift from the fishing gods and we should be thankful.

Giant Blue Marlin Takes the Lead in Day One Los Cabos Billfish Tournament 2011

The 2011 Los Cabos Billfish Tournament started with a mix of clouds and sunshine. The temperatures were in the low 90’s Fahrenheit with a slight breeze out of the south west. The humidity was in the low 60’s. The water temperatures were in the mid 80’s Fahrenheit, which is great for the Blue and Black Marlin, which is what this tournament is all about. The moon is 99% full.
The expectations were high for the 42 teams consisting of 216 anglers. And the action started early with the El Diablo hooking a Black Marlin at 10:34 AM. They eventually brought the fish to the scales and were disappointed when it only tipped the scales at 275 pounds, 25 pounds under the 300 pound limit and were penalized 350 points.
Next in was the Chupacabra with a 543 pound giant Blue Marlin. The crowd was defiantly pleased with the first qualifying marlin of the tournament. What a great way to really get the tournament going.

Next was the Angelina I with a 408 pound Black Marlin that took the prize for the largest Black Marlin of the day and the second biggest fish of the day.
Then came the tuna fun. The first Yellowfin Tuna weighed tipped the scales at 183.2 for the Wild Hooker boat and crew. Seeing some large tuna keeps the excitement up for the tournament.
Then the Karma III really hit it big with a giant 216 pound Yellowfin Tuna. Picante’s own Captain Brincos was part of the team which scored big. Now we are talking about some big tuna and this is only the first day of the tournament.
So in summary there were 20 billfish caught consisting of 2 Black Marlin, 3 Blue Marlin, 7 Striped Marlin and 8 Pacific Sailfish. But only 3 tuna were brought to the scales, and only 2 were giant Yellowfin Tuna.
It has been a great start to the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament for 2011 with Giant Marlin and Giant Tuna coming to the scales for the first day and more are expected throughout the tournament.

Cabo Sportfishing Tournament report 31 July 2011

Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Cabo Sportfishing
Tournament report 31 July 2011 from Picantesportfishing
<http://www.picantesportfishing.com>.

Bisbee's East Cape Tournament has been hot. And we don't just mean the
weather. Tournaments usually bring out the best and most dedicated
anglers and this year is no exception. The final results are in after
the awards banquet last night at the Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort. Day
one was some great fishing and great competition. And the big score of
the day was at 11:11:52 when Chucky VanWormer aboard the La Hielera set
a new tournament record by hooking and landing a 557 pound monster Blue
Marlin.

In this years tournament there were 62 teams consisting of 311 anglers.
The total billfish count for the tournament was 311. Only two Black
Marlin were brought in to be released. There were 25 Pacific Sailfish,
39 Striped Marlin and 38 Blue Marlin. But only the one caught by Chucky
VanWormer made it to the scales and was able to score some points.

The Tuna fishing was good, but only 4 brought to the scales were
qualifying with weights over the 40 pound minimum. The winning Yellowfin
Tuna was brought in by the team on the Moonraker. They had the winning
Yellowfin Tuna which weighed in at 56.20 pounds, they also had the
second place Yellowfin Tuna at 51.50 pounds.

The Dorado fishing was also pretty good with eight fish being brought to
the scales and weighing in at over the 30 pound minimum. They ranged
from 31.4 to a giant 47 pound Dorado also brought in by the Moonraker.

There was some disappointment that not more qualifying fish were brought
to the scales, but the numbers were good, the seas were calm and a good
time was had by all. With a new record for largest marlin caught during
the tournament hopes are high for more big fish the rest of the
tournament season.

Congratulations to all the fishermen from Picante Sportfishing and we
look forward to seeing you all during the fall tournament season.

Watch for some more fun in October when Cabo Fishing Tournament season
goes into high gear.

Cabo Sportfishing report for the week of 11-17 July 2011 from Picantesportfishing

Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Cabo Sportfishing report for the week of 11-17 July 2011 from Picantesportfishing <http://www.picantesportfishing.com>.

As we settle into the summer weather the fishing is still hanging in there. Most days have been under mostly blue skies with some clouds. It has been pretty calm in the mornings and later in the afternoon the day breeze picks up a little.

Marlin fishing has slowed down a bit with one in three boats bringing the Striped Marlin to the boats for a release. And we are now starting to see more Dorado. While the marlin fishing has slowed down the tuna fishing is still doing well.

For the week the boats have been averaging almost 3 Yellowfin Tuna per boat. And the Roosterfishing is still good. There have been numerous reports of Roosterfish over 50 pounds being caught in the Los Cabos area.

Now,we as we approach the hurricane season the weather is getting hot and humid. This week we are watching the development of Tropical Storm Dora as she builds up steam and heads north toward the Baja Peninsula. Tune in next week to see how the weather affects the weeks fishing.

Cabo Sportfishing report for the week of 4-10 July 2011

Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Cabo Sportfishing report
for the week of 4-10 July 2011 from Picantesportfishing
<http://www.picantesportfishing.com>.

Things in Cabo San Lucas are starting to settle into the summer rhythm.
The water has warmed up and we are getting into the routine of warm calm
mornings with the day breeze starting in the early afternoon.

The fishing has been pretty good. Good numbers of Striped Marlin are
being released and lots of Yellowfin Tuna are hitting the lures. With a
liberal sprinkling of Dorado and some inshore action with Roosterfish
it's a great mixture of fishing and catching.

And we are again seeing some shark action. All in all Cabo is still
producing the fishing that keeps people coming back for more.

Cabo Sportfishing report for the week of 27 June-3 July 2011

Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Cabo Sportfishing report for the week of 27 June-3 July 2011 from Picantesportfishing <http://www.picantesportfishing.com>.

The water in Cabo is finally warming up. We have been dealing with cold water from the Pacific being blown down and then around the peninsula and up as far as San Jose. Not the pattern we usually have. But now the fishing will heat up. About midweek the weather started warming up with the remnants of Tropical Storm Arlene coming from Eastern Mexico and across the mainland as she dumped lots of moisture and hit the west coast of mainland Mexico. We are now getting what's left of her moisture and heat. The humidity is up and with the clouds and calm mornings the ocean heated up quickly.

http://www.picantesportfishing.com/cabo-fishing-photos/cabo-fishing/billfish.html#

With the warmer water the Blue Marlin, Black Marlin and Sailfish are moving in. There have been some Blues and Blacks being hooked and some landed. We, at Picante, have been catching mainly Striped Marlin and Sailfish. Some of the Striped Marlin have been pretty small, just around 100 pounds. Wonder is that has to be with the water getting warm and the younger fish being in more abundance. And the Yellowfin Tuna are again showing up.

http://www.picantesportfishing.com/cabo-fishing-photos/image.raw?type=orig&id=358

Along with all the Yellowfin Tuna are some nice Dorado catches. We had one of over 55 pounds landed and it is going to get better. Now is prime time for the fishing to heat up.

http://www.picantesportfishing.com/cabo-fishing-photos/image.raw?type=orig&id=359

There have been some really nice Roosterfish being caught. One Roosterfish was estimated around 60 pounds. And another caught was estimated to be over 70 pounds. I know that estimates can be a little off, but even if they were, those were still some huge Roosterfish. Be sure to check back next week when the fishing should really heat up.
