Giant Blue Marlin Takes the Lead in Day One Los Cabos Billfish Tournament 2011

The 2011 Los Cabos Billfish Tournament started with a mix of clouds and sunshine. The temperatures were in the low 90’s Fahrenheit with a slight breeze out of the south west. The humidity was in the low 60’s. The water temperatures were in the mid 80’s Fahrenheit, which is great for the Blue and Black Marlin, which is what this tournament is all about. The moon is 99% full.

The expectations were high for the 42 teams consisting of 216 anglers. And the action started early with the El Diablo hooking a Black Marlin at 10:34 AM. They eventually brought the fish to the scales and were disappointed when it only tipped the scales at 275 pounds, 25 pounds under the 300 pound limit and were penalized 350 points.

Next in was the Chupacabra with a 543 pound giant Blue Marlin. The crowd was defiantly pleased with the first qualifying marlin of the tournament. What a great way to really get the tournament going.

Next was the Angelina I with a 408 pound Black Marlin that took the prize for the largest Black Marlin of the day and the second biggest fish of the day.

Then came the tuna fun. The first Yellowfin Tuna weighed tipped the scales at 183.2 for the Wild Hooker boat and crew. Seeing some large tuna keeps the excitement up for the tournament.

Then the Karma III really hit it big with a giant 216 pound Yellowfin Tuna. Picante’s own Captain Brincos was part of the team which scored big. Now we are talking about some big tuna and this is only the first day of the tournament.

So in summary there were 20 billfish caught consisting of 2 Black Marlin, 3 Blue Marlin, 7 Striped Marlin and 8 Pacific Sailfish. But only 3 tuna were brought to the scales, and only 2 were giant Yellowfin Tuna.

It has been a great start to the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament for 2011 with Giant Marlin and Giant Tuna coming to the scales for the first day and more are expected throughout the tournament.

Bisbee's East Cape Tournament has been hot. And we don't just mean the
weather. Tournaments usually bring out the best and most dedicated
anglers and this year is no exception. The final results are in after
the awards banquet last night at the Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort. Day
one was some great fishing and great competition. And the big score of
the day was at 11:11:52 when Chucky VanWormer aboard the La Hielera set
a new tournament record by hooking and landing a 557 pound monster Blue
Marlin.

In this years tournament there were 62 teams consisting of 311 anglers.
The total billfish count for the tournament was 311. Only two Black
Marlin were brought in to be released. There were 25 Pacific Sailfish,
39 Striped Marlin and 38 Blue Marlin. But only the one caught by Chucky
VanWormer made it to the scales and was able to score some points.

The Tuna fishing was good, but only 4 brought to the scales were
qualifying with weights over the 40 pound minimum. The winning Yellowfin
Tuna was brought in by the team on the Moonraker. They had the winning
Yellowfin Tuna which weighed in at 56.20 pounds, they also had the
second place Yellowfin Tuna at 51.50 pounds.

The Dorado fishing was also pretty good with eight fish being brought to
the scales and weighing in at over the 30 pound minimum. They ranged
from 31.4 to a giant 47 pound Dorado also brought in by the Moonraker.

There was some disappointment that not more qualifying fish were brought
to the scales, but the numbers were good, the seas were calm and a good
time was had by all. With a new record for largest marlin caught during
the tournament hopes are high for more big fish the rest of the
tournament season.

As we settle into the summer weather the fishing is still hanging in there. Most days have been under mostly blue skies with some clouds. It has been pretty calm in the mornings and later in the afternoon the day breeze picks up a little.

Marlin fishing has slowed down a bit with one in three boats bringing the Striped Marlin to the boats for a release. And we are now starting to see more Dorado. While the marlin fishing has slowed down the tuna fishing is still doing well.

For the week the boats have been averaging almost 3 Yellowfin Tuna per boat. And the Roosterfishing is still good. There have been numerous reports of Roosterfish over 50 pounds being caught in the Los Cabos area.

Now,we as we approach the hurricane season the weather is getting hot and humid. This week we are watching the development of Tropical Storm Dora as she builds up steam and heads north toward the Baja Peninsula. Tune in next week to see how the weather affects the weeks fishing.

Things in Cabo San Lucas are starting to settle into the summer rhythm.
The water has warmed up and we are getting into the routine of warm calm
mornings with the day breeze starting in the early afternoon.

The fishing has been pretty good. Good numbers of Striped Marlin are
being released and lots of Yellowfin Tuna are hitting the lures. With a
liberal sprinkling of Dorado and some inshore action with Roosterfish
it's a great mixture of fishing and catching.

And we are again seeing some shark action. All in all Cabo is still
producing the fishing that keeps people coming back for more.

The water in Cabo is finally warming up. We have been dealing with cold water from the Pacific being blown down and then around the peninsula and up as far as San Jose. Not the pattern we usually have. But now the fishing will heat up. About midweek the weather started warming up with the remnants of Tropical Storm Arlene coming from Eastern Mexico and across the mainland as she dumped lots of moisture and hit the west coast of mainland Mexico. We are now getting what's left of her moisture and heat. The humidity is up and with the clouds and calm mornings the ocean heated up quickly.

With the warmer water the Blue Marlin, Black Marlin and Sailfish are moving in. There have been some Blues and Blacks being hooked and some landed. We, at Picante, have been catching mainly Striped Marlin and Sailfish. Some of the Striped Marlin have been pretty small, just around 100 pounds. Wonder is that has to be with the water getting warm and the younger fish being in more abundance. And the Yellowfin Tuna are again showing up.

Along with all the Yellowfin Tuna are some nice Dorado catches. We had one of over 55 pounds landed and it is going to get better. Now is prime time for the fishing to heat up.

There have been some really nice Roosterfish being caught. One Roosterfish was estimated around 60 pounds. And another caught was estimated to be over 70 pounds. I know that estimates can be a little off, but even if they were, those were still some huge Roosterfish. Be sure to check back next week when the fishing should really heat up.

Summer is officially here, at least, according to the calendar. The
weather is definitely heating up. We are up in the 90's Fahrenheit, air
temperature, but we still have some cool water hanging around the tip of
the Baja, in the high 60's and low 70's Fahrenheit. The water on the Sea
of Cortez side has warmed up, with water on the Gordo Banks, the 1150
and 95 spots into the upper 70's and lower 80's Fahrenheit. With the
temps still around 80 the big Black and Blue Marlin are not here in
numbers, but there have been a few caught, but not enough to brag about.
And the Striped Marlin numbers have been a little down. That is probably
due to the boats targeting the Yellowfin Tuna. Catches have been good
with boats averaging about 3.7 tuna per boat. And the 3.7 number refers
to the average over the all the boats, even though there have been some
partial fish brought in because of Shark predation. The sharks have been
very active and around in pretty good numbers.

The Dorado fishing is starting to pick up with some multiple catches,
but few Wahoo are being caught. But the word is out that the Roosterfish
are around and one was caught while trolling for marlin last week. It
was estimated to be over 60 pounds. And with the continuing warming up
of the water, we can expect the Roosterfish fishing to heat up. Up the
coast there have already been some large Roosterfish being caught. And
now it is Cabo's turn.

Look for more numbers of the Blue and Black Marlin being caught in the
next few weeks and through to the end of the year. Tight lines.

Cabo fishing is still hanging in there. With winds from the North and
West, lots of cold water has been pushing up against the Baja peninsula.
So the water on the Pacific side of the Baja is staying cool and that is
affecting the fishing. The water on the Sea of Cortez side has been much
warmer and that is why the fishing there is still good. Again the
tourist count is low so not so many boats are going out, but we still
have a handle on the fish available. There still have been good catches
of Striped Marlin and a few Blue Marlin. The Yellowfin Tuna catches are
still doing well. And we are now seeing Dorado and Wahoo in the catches
with the occasional Pacific Sailfish. And big Roosterfish are starting
to show up just a little ways from Cabo.

We are still waiting to see what Tropical Storm Beatriz is going to do.
She is moving slowly up the coast in a North Westerly direction at 8 MPH
with sustained winds of 70 MPH. Most of the predictions show her heading
out to sea as she approaches southern Baja as can be seen in the
National Hurricane Center of the NOAA site.

With Beatriz heading our way the waters might warm up and there will
probably be some stiff winds. It looks like the west coast of the
mainland will get hit with the brunt of the storm as there is already
lots of wind and rain. Tonight will tell what happens there and it will
be a few days before we see the affects here in Cabo. So our Cabo
fishing should keep getting better. We hope the storm won't cause much
damage and that everyone has tight lines.
