It Was Like Christmas for the Team on the Rehab

Well the Bisbee’s Black and Blue Marlin Tournament, Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore Tournament and the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament are all finished. And coming up next week is the November 3-6 is the Los Cabos tuna Jackpot. But we still have some of our regular customer coming down to do some fine Cabo fishing. Besides the tournament Picante has been sending out a few private charters. The numbers for the week don’t reflect the actual fish numbers because the yachts chartered for the tournament were targeting Black and Blue Marlin only. But considering that, the fishing was pretty good. The flags have been flying.

Three of our fleet finished in the top 10. The 40’ Cabo Flybridge, Caliente brought in the first fish and ended up in 10^th place. The KW Karma, a 43’ Cabo Express finished in 5^th place and the Rehab, a 35’ Cabo Express finished up in 1^st Place to the tune of $254,905 for their two Black Marlin with a total of 907 points. It was a great tournament! The first day was especially exciting with an 800 lb. Marlin brought to the scales about 10 minutes past closing. But the two big Black Marlin did the trick.

 

A short recap of the tournament numbers: 103 teams, 628 anglers, 74 Billfish, including 13 Black Marlin, 32 Blue Marlin, 28 Striped Marlin and 1 Sailfish. The overall billfish hook-up conversion rate was 88.10%. Pretty good catching, too.

Yesterday, the Striped Marlin fishing really heated up. Tune in next week to see how hot the fishing has been.

 

2010 Bisbee's Black and Blue Marlin Tournament Results and Winnings

There were lots of fish brought in to the scales and the final results are in and . It has been a very exciting and successful tournament.

The tournament started out on both a good and a bad note. Day one fish count was the highest number of Marlin brought to the scales in the 30 year history of the tournament. There were 10 big Marlin weighed during the day, three were big Blue Marlin and the rest big Black Marlin. It was a great day for the tournament.

Now, to the bad. Well it wasn’t really bad just a little bad luck. The first bit of disappointment was for Amanda Thompson aboard the Dog House, when her Blue Marlin tipped the scales at 297. That was under the minimum 300 lb. weight. She was penalized 31 points. It was a big disappointment for her. Then the whammy hit Great Escape as it took 5 ½ hours to land and boat a big Blue Marlin. They were rushing to get back in before the 9 PM dead line. Well, they didn’t make it. They were less than 10 minutes late, but a rule is a rule. But the biggest disappointment was when they weighed the fish. It tipped the scale at 800 lbs. That was one Big Blue Marlin!! Carl Riley and his team aboard Great Escape, a 40-foot Cabo, did their best, but the fish had become tail wrapped and died. That made it just a little too difficult for Carl to rush it in. So they missed being the tournament winners. That made the big Black Marlin, weighing 599 lbs. that Jose Almanza and Team Reelaxe landed the day 1 winner. John Stonecipher, fishing aboard Rehab, a 35-foot Cabo yacht and part of the Picante Sportfishing Fleet, was in  second with another Black Marlin at 560 pounds, followed by Buzz Colton (C-Bandit) with a 549 lb. Black Marlin. Total jackpots for the day totaled $539,155.00. The big winner for the day was C-Bandit with their 549 lb. Black Marlin. They had entered a couple of good jackpots which netted them $282,299.00.

Then along came day 2. Only 4 marlin were weighed. The Great Escape came to the scale first to get their first legal fish, a 430 lb. Blue Marlin brought in by angler, John Sellers. This time they were having some good luck. Then Dream Weaver angler, John Boratto, landed a Black Marlin of 484.0 lbs. And the third place fish was a 426 lb. Blue Marlin brought in by Chuck Grieger onboard Sporty Game. Again the daily jackpots totaled $539,155.00. Dreamweaver’s fish netted John Boratto, and his 10 Brothers Fishing Team, a cool $411,655.00. The Sporty Games’ Chuck Grieger and team picked up their pot to the tune of $127,500.00.

Day 3, the final chance to score big, had finally arrived. This is when John Stonecipher and his team aboard the Rehab changed tactics and scored. Most boats were fishing out on the Gordo Banks where the big marlin had been hanging out. Well, John, along with his lifelong buddy, Captain Mike Hennessy, from Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii, decided to fish closer to home. They went out about “3 miles off land’s end” in “maybe 80 fathoms,” according to John. Well it paid off as they landed a 347 lb Black Marlin. That put them in 1^st place overall. Then at the end of the day, the team on the Fisherman brought in a marlin hoping to get in the money. They weighed their Black Marlin in at a disappointing 292 lbs. They were penalized 41 points and lost their chance for another top place finish. So John Stonecipher and his Rehab Team took home $129,455.00 for the day. A couple of the jackpots weren’t entered, so the jackpots rolled over to previous days. C-Bandit took home $282,200.00 in jackpot money. And Tiger Spirit took home $127,500.00. 

There were lots of fish brought in to the scales and the final results are in and . It has been a very exciting and successful tournament. Now to the overall standings announced at the tournament banquet.

3^rd place in the Release Division was Mobius with winnings of $7,278.13. 2^nd place in the Release Division was Auriga with winnings of $13,100.63. And the 1^st place winner in the Release Division was El Lobo, with prize money totaling $37,846.25.

Right as I am writing Wayne Bisbee is announcing the overall winners. Here they are, in 5^th place, the KW Karma, from the Picante Sportfishing Fleet, with winnings of $6,180. 4^th place is the team on the Dream Weaver with winnings totaling $430,237.50. 3^rd place is C-Bandit, overall netting $614,612.50. 2^nd place was the team from Reelaxe, whose total winnings were $176,530.

 And the 1^st place winner of the 2010 Bisbee’s Black and Blue Marlin Tournament is the Rehab, of the Picante Sportfishing fleet, consisting of John Stonecipher, John Stonecipher Jr., Captain Mike Hennessy, Bill Donahue, and Mike Meridith. With two Black Marlin totaling 907 points, their total cash winnings were $254,905.

Besides the prizes and great angling, we had some other firsts. This was the first year that there was mandatory use of non offset circle hooks with all natural baits. The circle hook requirement helps to alleviate the problem with gut hooking and thus fish can be released with little harm.

And this year the Bisbee’s Black and Blue Marlin Tournaments, www.bisbees.com, partnered with Offshore Live Broadcasting, http://www.offshorelivebroadcasting.com , Picante Sportfishing, www.picantesportfishing.com, and Baja Cantina, http://www.bajacantina.com.mx/ to provide a technology first. Using satellite tracking technology and live video feeds will lead to the offshore Sportfishing fans being able to watch live video, just as it is being done in Auto and Motorcycle racing. Each boat is outfitted with a transponder for safety purposes and rule enforcement. The boat's position will be displayed on the fishing grid so family members and friends can follow the action. One boat, Team Baja Cantina/Picante, will also be carrying a cameraman. The action and excitement from the cockpit will be uplinked to a satellite and broadcast live over the internet. The scene at the scales will also be streaming live as fish are weighed. Click on direct links on bisbees.com or CatchStats.com to follow all the action. So this year has become another record setting year. Record numbers of fish, lots of winnings, totaling $1,933,190.00, and first time live broadcast streaming of a big game fishing tournament, the Bisbee’s Black and Blue Marlin Tournament.

3rd Day and Preliminary Results of 2010 Bisbee's Black and Blue Marlin Tournament

Here's a rehash of the days events. The first fish of the day was
brought in by Rehab, one of the Picante Fleet, just before noon. The
fish weighed in at 347 lbs. It was a Black Marlin and was caught by
angler, John Stonecipher. It was the second fish landed by John so he is
angler of the tournament. It was the only fish weighed early in the day.
But just before lines out, another boat reported a landed fish.

The next team was the Fisherman team fishing on Santana. They brought in
a small Black Marlin hoping that it was over 300. But it was another
heartbreaker. It was a 292 pound fish, the third heartbreak fish to hit
the scales. So they too were penalized. It was probably a hard decision,
but just a matter of a few pounds is hard to estimate.

2nd Day of Bisbee Still Going Strong

After yesterdays exciting beginning and ending, today was a little slow.
The first fish was brought in by Great Escape by angler, John Sellers.
They were the team that got in less than 10 minutes after scale closing
time with a 800 lb. fish that didn't qualify because it was late. This
time their fish was a Blue Marlin of 430 lbs.

Shortly afterwards the Maverick brought in a Blue Marlin of 320 lbs.
the angler was Robert Patton. So that left the Great Escape in good
shape for first place. Then a little after 5PM the Dream Weaver arrived
with a 484 lb. Black Marlin. John Boratto fought the fish for over 2
hours. And the big Black Marlin put them into first place for the day.

Then in came Sporty Game with a 425 lb. Blue Marlin landed by fisherman,
Chuck Grieger.

First Marlin of Bisbee Tournament Belongs to Andrea Fletcher

The excitement started early today. The first fish was caught about 11
AM and it was brought to the scales in short time. This, the first
marlin of the Bisbee's Black and Blue Marlin Tournament, was caught by
Andrea Fletcher onboard the Caliente, a 40' Cabo Flybridge and part of
Picante Sportfishing's fleet. The Blue weighed in at 397 pounds. (Photo

The second fish was a 431.00 lb. Black Marlin caught by angler, Ron
Pasco, aboard the KW Karma, another Picante managed boat.

Then aboard the Doghouse angler, Amanda Thompson, brought her Blue
Marlin to the scales, but it weighed in at 297 lbs. three pounds short
of the legal tournament sized fish.

The next fish brought in was a Black Marlin of 549 lbs caught by angler,
Michael "Buzz" Colton, aboard the C-Bandit.

That fish was followed by an even bigger Black Marlin of 560 lbs. The
angler was John Stonecipher aboard the Cabo 35 Express, Rehab, also part
of the Picante team.

Then the afternoon blitz started. It was lines out at 5:00 PM and the
boats headed in. The final standings were

So what is the Picante Sportfishing story? It started out in the summer
of 1994 when Team Picante took the the 40' Tolleycraft, Picante, to Cabo
San Lucas and then decided to fish the Bisbee's Black and Blue Marlin
Tournament. And fish it Team Picante did. On the morning of the first
day they hooked a big Blue Marlin, estimated at over 500 lbs. But after
a short fight the fish came unbuttoned. Needless to say there were some
long faces on board the Picante that day. But, as luck would have it, in
about 30 minutes they had another bigger marlin on. Well they brought
this one to the boat and it was the biggest marlin any of them had seen.
This time they were ectatic. They knew they had a winner. So off to the
scales they went. After hauling the fish off the boat onto a trolley and
getting it to the weighing area there were looks of wonderment, because
that fish was the biggest marlin anyone there had seen. The got it up to
the scales and when the scales tipped up to 993 lbs. the crowd went
wild. As you can guess fish around 1000 lbs. aren't often caught during
the Bisbee Tournaments. So with the cash winnings and the winning of a
35 'Cabo, a business was born. And since that time Picante has won
$3,786,174.00 and become Cabo Yachts, Mexican Dealer. And the big Blue
Marlin still stands as the biggest Marlin caught during the Bisbee's
Black and Blue Marlin Tournament.

Now on to some new technology that is being used. Live GPS tracking and
live cameras at the scales and onboard the Picante, the 40 ft.
Tolleycraft, live streaming video of their fishing day. You can see what
it is like to troll for big marlin and what it is like to hopefully,
fight a giant marlin right on your computer. Here is a little about the
technology right from the Off Shore Live Broadcasting website,

element of society for one primary reason—the capability to be televised
and/or internet broadcast in a live, play-by-play format. This was true

The first marlin of the Bisbee's Black and Blue Marlin Tournament is
in. It was caught by Andrea Fletcher onboard the Caliente, a 40' Cabo
Flybridge and part of Picante's fleet. The Blue weighed in at 397

Cabo Oct 11-17 Fishing Report

The fishing in Cabo has been great this last week. We have just finished two world class fishing tournaments - the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament and the Bisbee's Los Cabos Offshore Tournament. There have been some big marlin and some big tuna caught. Winning marlin have been between 466 and 713 pounds. Winning tuna have been up to 161.8 pounds. There are still lots of fish out there and starting tomorrow the teams in the Bisbee's Black and Blue Marlin Tournament will be fishing for their chance to be a big winner. Check back later in the weeks for the winners and their winnings.

In some non tournament fishing results, we had some big fish taken this week also. Tuna up to weights over 200 pounds and a Wahoo of over 80 pounds were taken.

On the 11th of October aboard the 35' Cabo Yacht, Cisco, a nice Blue Marlin was taken by the Hayes Party.

Then on the 12th onboard the Picantito III Rachel and Chris Donmencic caught a nice Dorado.

The 14th was a good fishing day. Aboard the 32' Cabo Yacht,Picante Express,  the Howell party caught a nice Wahoo.

Then on the 45' Cabo Express, Picante 45, a nice tuna was caught by the Team Picante group.
 Good work, Bill!!

The 15th, the Ison-Guess party brought another Wahoo to boat aboard the 35' Cabo Yacht,

The Picantito II  had another Dorado day on the 16th with some nice fish being landed by the Maddox family.

Again aboard the 45' Cabo Express, Picante 45, the Soper party boated a couple of nice Yellowfin Tuna with one being the biggest Tuna for the day.

On the 17th this nice Tuna aboard the 35' Cabo Yacht, Cisco  became part of the Nielsen pre-Bisbee celebration.

Bisbee's Los Cabos Offshore Tournament Results, 17 October 2010.

Well, the results are in and again there have been some big marlin weighed at the Bisbee's Los Cabos Offshore Tournament. The top honors goes to Barnes Cooper aboard the Incognito with a 540 lb. Blue Marlin. Their winning Marlin was followed by Anthony Hsieh aboard Bad Company, with his 490 lb. Black Marlin. Not far behind was Rich Hamilton, aboard Bandit, with his 470 lb Black Marlin.

In the Billfish Release category, a total of 28 of the 59 total boats released marlin. The scores ranged from 100 to 700 points. The winners were first, 3-way tie at 700 each for Tenacious, Ez-Duz-It and Bull Rider. Second place was another tie at 600 points. Those boats were El Gallo and El Lobo. In third place, at 500 points, was Animal House. Total Billfish Count was 55, which consisted of 3 Black Marlin, 16 Blue Marlin, 32 Striped Marlin and 4 Sailfish.

The heaviest Tuna were a 155.0 lb. Yellowfin caught by angler, Jesus Franco, aboard the Muchacho Alegre; a 152.30 lb. Yellowfin caught by angler, Tim Burgess, aboard the Caliente (part of the Picante Sportfishing Fleet); followed by a 128.10 Yellowfin caught by angler, Miguel Kola, aboard the Marea. The total Tuna count was 11. And the Dorado count was 7, none of which qualified.

Congratulations to all the anglers for a great tournament. And Congratulations to all the winners for their efforts to make the Bisbee's Los Cabos Offshore Tournament a success.

Bisbee's Los Cabos Offshore Tournament

This morning the excitement is still building in the Cabo San Lucas
Marina. The Los Cabos Billfish Tournament just ended and the official
winners are being announced at the Awards Banquet, at Playa Grande
Resort. Some big marlin were caught. But today the Bisbee's Los Cabos
Offshore Tournament, sometimes called the little Bisbee, is off and
running. The start took place this morning at 8:00 AM with the
traditional "Shotgun Start."

59 teams comprising 258 anglers fished today. There were 23 Billfish
caught: 2 Black Marlin, 9 Blue Marlin, 8 Striped Marlin and 4 Sailfish.
A pretty good start for what turned out to be a day of somewhat sporty
seas. The largest fish was a 490 lb. Black Marlin caught by angler,
Anthony Hsieh, aboard Bad Company at 9:51 AM. This was followed a half
hour later at 10:21 AM by another Black Marlin by angler, Michael Menas,
aboard the Shambala.

The top teams with the most billfish release points are Tenacious, with
600, El Gallo, with 600, and High Risk, with 400. The heaviest tuna, at
152.30 pounds, was caught by angler, Tim Burgess aboard the Caliente,
part of the Picante Sportfishing Fleet. The tuna category should be
interesting, as lately quite a few tuna in the 200 pound range have been
caught. Keep checking back as the tournament proceeds, we will try to
keep you updated.

Big Marlins Win Los Cabos Billfish Tournament

The lines are all in and the preliminary results are in. The official results will be announced at the 7:00 p.m. Awards Banquet, at Playa Grande Resort in Cabo San Lucas.
It looks like the 713 lb. Black Marlin that was caught by Daniel Fisher aboard the 35' Cabo Yacht, Fisherman will be the big fish winner. Also aboard the Fisherman, angler Hugo Olachea Pino's 466 lb. Black Marlin added to their score to post a total of 1179.00 points.

Following in second place was angler, Shawn Guttersen's 629 lb. Blue Marlin caught aboard the Sneak Attack.
The next spot in the winner's circle was a very interesting battle.Just winning by a couple of pounds was angler,Jason Pruden's 465 lb. Blue Marlin. Yep, a couple of pounds.

Angler,Rich Hamilton's 463.0 lb. Blue Marlin, aboard the Bandit missed by two pounds. Also interesting to note is that the Black Marlin(466 .lbs) on the Fisherman was the third biggest fish, but the points were added to the biggest fish totals to put them in first place.

Most Billfish Release Points was another close match. The top three spots were  Game On with 1300 points, Hang Em High with 1200 points and in third Alure with 1100 points. Pretty tight race.
So there were 37 teams consisting of 209 anglers. There were 65 billfish caught, 2 Black Marlin, 14 Blue Marlin, 45 Striped Marlin, and 4 Sailfish. Other catches included 6 Yellowfin Tuna, 10 Wahoo and 2 Dorado. Overall the tournament was a success. Lots of fishermen out on the seas having fun doing what they like to do, fish. And of course the fun competition and stories that go along with all fishing trips.

Big Tuna just weighed at the scales.A 251 lb. monster Yellowfin Tuna was
just weighed at the scales. Angler Jimmie Li, aboard the Marlin Too
battled with the fish for 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Los Cabos Billfish Tournament Day 2 results are in. The Billfish counts was a little lower. Out of 37 boats, 16 Billfish were caught and released, 3 Blue Marlin, 12 Striped Marlin and 1 Sailfish.

The Day 2 daily billfish release point totals were

Incognito                600 points
Bad Medicine        500 points
Wildcatter              500 points
Hang Em High       500 points
Great Escape Jr     100 points
Summertime        100 points
Chupacabra          100 points
Sneak Attack        100 points


The Yellowfin Tuna count was 3 with a whopper of a Tuna that tipped the scales at 209 lbs. that was landed by John Truschke aboard the Santi(See photo above courtesy of Los Cabos Billfish Tournament).

The Wahoo count for today was 3 fish with the heaviest Wahoo a nice 50.9 lb.fish landed by Angler Clay Hensley aboard the Chupacabra.

So tune in tomorrow for the Day 3 finals and the overall winners.

4:30 PM Lines out.The unofficial daily Billfish counts are in.37
Billfish were caught. 27 Striped Marlin, 9 Blue Marlin and 1 Black
Marlin. The only boat bringing in a Marlin is the Fisherman. It looks
like Daniel Guerrero has the biggest fish of the day, that is, if it is
over 300 lbs. The fish will be scored at 1 point per pound if it is over
300 lbs. If it is less than 300 lbs the team will be penalized 300
points plus 2 points per pound under 300 lbs. So the captains have to
have a good eye.

The scoring goes like this 300 points per Black or Blue Marlin plus 1
point per pound if it comes to the scales and it over 300 lbs. One point
per lb. for any Striped Marlin brought to the scale and is over 175 lbs.
If it is under weight the penalty will be 300 points plus 2 points per
lb. under the minimum. Only one marlin per boat per day. Released Blue
and Black Marlin will receive 500 points;Striped Marlin, Sailfish or
Spearfish will receive 100 points.
The teams must supply their own video cameras to verify their releases

So now we just sit an wait to get the results of the fish being brought
in. More as it comes in.

Last night, 12 October 2010, 5:30 PM, the final registration, captain's
meeting and kickoff party took place at the Playa Grande Resort in Cabo
San Lucas, Mexico. The rules were explained and questions answered.

This morning, Wednesday, 13 October 37 boats lined up. And, at 7:30 AM,
the Bimini start took place and they were off as the flare was fired.

With 37 teams competing, totaling 208 anglers, the Billfish count is 28.
The top 3 teams are Don Valerio with 700 Points, Game On with 600 points
and tied for 3rd place are Minerva VI, Reel Quest, Bad Company,and Blue
Marlin.

Cabo Fishing Report for Week of 4-10 October, 2010

Here is this weeks report. Also starting tomorrow is the tournament season. I will keep you updated.

Cabo fishing is still producing lots of fish. The number of boats going out has dropped dramatically. But that is about to change with the beginning of the fall tournament season. There should be lots of action for the tournament participants. With some large fish being landed, there is always the possibility of record breaking fish.

The fish to beat is still the 993 lb. Blue Marlin caught in 1994 by the 40 ft. Tolleycraft, Picante. It was the Bisbee’s Black and Blue winner and still holds the record as largest fish caught in the tournaments. We have been seeing fish n the 500 lb. plus range, so the big ones are around.

 Speaking of big marlin, on 4 October, the highlight of the week was an estimated 500 lb. Black Marlin that was released by the 31ft. Cabo Express, Picante Expresso with Captain Gilberto “Bori” Castro at the controls.

 The client was Jean Paul Larue from Bonneville, France. He made a long trip to catch that fish and release both the Black marlin and a Striped Marlin. He also boated a nice Wahoo for some culinary delights.

On the 6^th Debra and Rick Carreon got to fight a nice Striped Marlin aboard the 24’ Shamrock Picantito II.

The next big day was the 7^th. Aboard the 40 ft. Tolleycraft, Picante, yep the same yacht that landed the Bisbee’s record marlin, the Lewandowski family with Captain David Lieras, Top Captain in the 2010 IGFA Offshore Championship, released 3 Striped Marlin and a Pacific Sailfish while boating a Dorado for their evening’s repast. Thanks to deckhand Fernando for helping land all those Cabo billfish.

Also on the 7^th, onboard the 35’ Cabo Express, Cisco with Captain Nunez and deckhand Ricardo, put Michael Christe, Adam Hatton and Clancy Cottman onto some nice tuna, one of which weighed in at 187 lbz.

The 9^th saw the 24’ Shamrock, Picantito II released an estimated 250 lb. Blue Marlin along with boating 13 Dorado for the Bardwell party.

The 10^th was the end of the week and the 45’ Cabo Express Picante 45 ended the fishing week by putting Dan Boone and his friends onto 2 Striped Marlin and 4 Dorado. Some good fighting and some good eating!

 

Fleet production for the week was 3 Blue Marlin, 1 Black Marlin, 13 Striped Marlin, 1 Pacific Sailfish, 40 Dorado, 3 Yellowfin Tuna and 2 Wahoo.

Biggest Fishing Tournaments of the Year Right Here in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Get ready for the Biggest Tournaments of the year, right here In Cabo. The fishing has been hot and there have been some large marlin hooked in the last few weeks. Still the fish to beat for the biggest Marlin in the Bisbee’s history is the 993 lb. Blue Marlin caught by the 40 ft. Tollycraft Picante in the 1994 Bisbee’s Black and Blue Marlin Tournament. October 12th - 16th, 2010
The Los Cabos Billfish Tournament is a three-day team event with top team honors going to the team that tallies the most points per pound.
The tournament pays down to third place (first, second and third). The tournament will also award cash and prizes to the team(s) that catch the largest fish (by weight) in three eligible billfish species.

Release trophies and cash prizes will also be awarded to the top three teams scoring the most billfish release points.
Optional marlin, tuna, wahoo and dorado jackpots will also award cash and prizes.
